Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recommended cutting education funding by $4.4 billion in the budget he presented in Sacramento today. He also proposed suspending the constitutionally guaranteed level of education funding provided for in Proposition 98, something that has only been done once other time before.
So much for the “Year of Education,” huh?
Such drastic cuts to California schools will mean fewer teachers, fewer books and supplies, fewer clubs and activities and larger class sizes throughout the state. Less spending on education today mortgages the future of the 6.2 million students who count on public education in the state.
Students, teachers, school administrators and citizens must organize together to prevent such draconian cuts and remind the governor that education should be the state’s highest priority–in the good financial years as well as the bad.
What do you think of this plan? How would such cuts affect your school?
E-mail the Governor and tell him what you think.
More information on the budget cuts can be found in the Sacramento Bee, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle and San Diego Union-Tribune.
