Budget deficit bigger than expected

doa-200.jpgCalifornia’s budget deficit has grown to a whopping $16 billion since Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced his plans for a 10-percent across-the-board budget cuts just a few months ago.

Legislative Analyst Elizabeth Hill said the Governor’s budget proposal was seriously flawed because it didn’t prioritize important state programs like education. She instead suggested an alternative budget that increased some fees and taxes, but cut less from vital state programs.

The time is now for the state to acknowledge that education funding deserves to be protected and that the state’s fiscal crisis should not be solved by gutting public schools.

By leading a rally at your school on April 18, you can join this movement for quality education and demand that the politicians reject across-the-board budget cuts.
